IN THIS LESSON

This week, we will be doing a deep dive into AI. How an AI is built; why evolutionary theory helps you understand it; and some philosophical questions it raises.

Resources

  • This section’s science content includes a couple of pieces:

    • The transformative paper from 2017 that allowed for the development of modern LLMs (large language models like chatGPT). Linked here.

      • For this extremely technical paper, you will need to rely on external sources (wikipedia, chatGPT, etc.) to understand what it’s about.

      • I do not expect you to fully understand that details of this manuscript.

      • I DO expect you to have a broad idea of what the problem was that this research provided a solution for, at a very general level, specifically as it applies to building LLMs and other AI models.

    • Check out this very big-picture overview of how an AI algorithm can be built.

    • Also, please watch the follow-up incredibly short video that mentions neural networks.

  • Please continue your reading of Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood!

    • Deepfake Tiktoks

    • M3GAN (Movie)

    • Companion (Movie)

    • Black Mirror “White Christmas” ep.
